Pineapple Leaf Fiber (PALF):
High-Performance Natural Fiber Reinforcement for Sustainable Composite Materials
Pineapple Leaf Fiber (PALF) is a high-performance natural fiber known for its outstanding mechanical properties. While many natural fibers share cellulose as a primary component, the amount and alignment of cellulose vary significantly among different fibers, leading to differences in performance. PALF stands out with its high tensile strength and modulus, making it an excellent candidate for reinforcement in composite materials.
When comparing specific mechanical properties relative to density, PALF performs on par with widely used synthetic fibers such as glass fiber. However, unlike glass fiber, PALF is non-brittle, does not irritate skin or lungs, and is safer to handle during manufacturing. Additionally, PALF does not cause abrasion or excessive wear on processing machinery. Its lower density helps reduce product weight, and it can be disposed of through composting or energy recovery without generating microplastic waste.
Beyond its technical advantages, PALF is highly sustainable. It is sourced from agricultural waste—an abundant, low-cost resource that is currently underutilized. With both environmental and mechanical benefits, PALF holds strong potential as a natural alternative to synthetic and other natural fibers in industrial applications.
